Catchings returns to rehab Tuesday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tamika Catchings, the top scorer and rebounder for the No. 2 Vols, underwent knee surgery Monday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Catchings, from Duncanville, Texas, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee Jan. 15 against Mississippi State. Vols spokeswoman Debby Jennings said the surgery was a success and that Catchings will return to her rehab workouts Tuesday.

Doctors say it usually takes a few months to rehabilitate a torn ACL. In 1997, Vols point guard Kellie Jolly recovered in about three months from a similar injury.

Tennessee has won seven straight games since Catchings was injured, but she says she wants to be healthy by the Final Four in March.

Catchings was a freshman when the Vols won a national championship in 1998, and the senior says she wants one more title before she graduates.

Catchings is only the second Vols player -- after Chamique Holdsclaw -- to reach 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. When she was injured, Catchings had 2,113 points and 1,004 rebounds.
