Penn State's Mazzante is top freshman

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Purdue senior All-American Katie Douglas has been named the 2001 Big Ten Player of the Year by both the league's coaches and media, the conference announced Tuesday.
Douglas repeated as the media's Player of the Year honoree while earning her first coaches' selection. Douglas is only the third player in Big Ten history to have been named player of the year twice. Northwestern's Anucha Browne (1984 and 1985) and Ohio State?s Tracey Hall (1986 and 1987) are the others.
"I'm very happy for and proud of Katie," Purdue coach Kristy Curry said. "What she means to this team can't really be explained by just looking at her stats, and I think people recognize that. She is our leader in so many different ways. And she is, without a doubt, the best player in this conference."
After leading Purdue to the 2001 Big Ten Championship title, Douglas was the only unanimous selection by the coaches and media to the All-Big Ten first team. Joining her on the media's first team were Purdue teammate Camille Cooper, Indiana's Jill Chapman, Iowa's Lindsey Meder and Randi Peterson, Penn State's Kelly Mazzante and Wisconsin's Tamara Moore and Jessie Stomski.
The coaches' All-Big Ten first team included Illinois' Allison Curtin, Iowa's Meder and Cara Consuegra, Penn State's Mazzante and Maren Walseth, Douglas and Cooper from Purdue and Wisconsin's Stomski.
Mazzante, the first-ever rookie to lead the Big Ten in scoring, was named the Freshman of the Year on both ballots. She averaged 18.8 points per game overall and 19.7 points per game in Big Ten play. Mazzante is the only Lady Lion to have earned the honor. She was joined on the coaches' All-Freshman Team by Iveta Marcauskaite of Illinois, Lindsay Whalen of Minnesota and Shalicia Hurns and Shereka Wright of Purdue.
Wisconsin's Tamara Moore was tabbed as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in both votes. The junior guard was among the NCAA leaders with 3.58 steals per game during the regular season while running the point for the Badgers.
First-year Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder was chosen as the 2001 Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the media and by her peers. After going 9-18 overall and 6-10 in the Big Ten a year ago, the Hawkeyes followed Bluder to a 17-9 mark during the regular season and tied for second in the Big Ten with a 12-4 record. Iowa also earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten tournament.
Each of the top four teams in the final regular season Big Ten standings boasted an individual award winner. Additionally, Wisconsin, Penn State and Iowa each had three student-athletes earn first or second team honors.
