Three Lady Vols picked to first team



BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Georgia's Kelly Miller took Player of the Year honors and Tennessee's Pat Summitt claimed the top coach title Wednesday in the Southeastern Conference awards selected by the league's 12 coaches.

The women's basketball post-season awards were announced as the SEC's four-day tournament begins Thursday in Memphis.

Kelly Miller and Coco Miller of Georgia, along with LSU's Marie Ferdinand, were unanimous choices for the first team all-SEC.

Tennessee led all teams with three first-team members, while Georgia and Vanderbilt had two each.

Other first team members were: LaToya Thomas of Mississippi State; Kara Lawson, Gwen Jackson and Michelle Snow, all of Tennessee; Vanderbilt's Zuzana Klimesova and Chantelle Anderson; and Brandi McCain of Florida.

The second team all-conference: Deanna Nolan and Tawana McDonald of Georgia; Tamika Catchings and Semeka Randall of Tennessee; Shondra Johnson of Alabama; Naomi Mobley and Tombi Bell of Florida; Teresa Carter and Shaunzinski Gortman of South Carolina; and Jennifer Fambrough of Vanderbilt.

Georgia's Christi Thomas was named Freshman of the Year. Others on the all-freshman team were: Vanessa Hayden of Florida, Ashley Robinson of Tennessee, Shameka Christon of Arkansas and Selia Helm of Kentucky. Thomas and Robinson were unanimous choices.
