Rams to face BYU for league crown

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Ashley Augspurger scored 13 points and Angie Gorton made a key steal late in the game as Colorado State crushed New Mexico's hopes of making it to the Mountain West Conference championship game.

New Mexico finished the season 18-12 overall and 8-6 in conference play after losing 70-65 to the Rams in the semifinal Friday.

Colorado State will play Brigham Young for the title. The Cougars beat Utah 57-50 in the other semifinal Friday.

New Mexico had made five consecutive field goals in the final 3:24, including a 3-pointer by Cristal Garcia to cut the Rams' lead to 64-59.

Jordan Adams and Nikki Heckroth hit a basket each to pull the Lobos to three down with about a minute left, but Adams fouled Gorton, sending her to the line for two points.

The Rams hit another free throw with 19 seconds left to make it 68-65. At the other end, the Lobos tried to reverse the ball and find one of their 3-point shooters, but Gorton stole the ball with six seconds left.

"It shouldn't have happened," New Mexico coach Don Flanagan said. "We've been running (the play) all game long. Our objective was to shoot the 3."

Garcia fouled Gorton, sending her to the line for another two. Gorton finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two assists.

McKinnon and Garcia led the Lobos with 13 points apiece. McKinnon was 5-for-8 from the field and Garcia hit three 3-pointers. Miranda Sanchez added 11 points.

"I thought we played very competitively," Flanagan said. "I thought we made a lot of errors down the stretch, little errors that cost us some opportunities and some basic fundamentals that we could have done better."

The teams battled through 13 lead changes in the first half. Colorado State led 34-32 at the break.

The Rams opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 43-34 lead with just more than 16 minutes remaining. They posted their largest lead at 11 points with four minutes left.

Elizabeth English and Lisa Narkiewicz scored 12 points apiece for the Rams and Shannon Strecker had 10.
