Shippen cites family concerns

PROVO, Utah – BYU women's basketball coach Trent Shippen resigned Friday, then joined the staff of his successor, former NBA player Jeff Judkins.

Shippen, 72-48 in four seasons, cited "concern for my family" in stepping down. Under Shippen, BYU reached the Mountain West tournament championship game twice and made two postseason trips to the NIT and one to the NCAA.

This is the first head coaching job for Judkins, who spent last season as an assistant to Shippen while also handling basketball operations for both the men's and women's programs at BYU.

Judkins also was an assistant for 10 seasons with the Utah men's team. He was on Rick Majerus' staff when the Utes lost to Kentucky in the 1998 national title game.

Judkins played for the Utes from 1974-78 and spent five NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz.
