EUGENE, Ore. -- Former University of Oregon women's basketball coach Jody Runge will receive just over $520,000 in a settlement agreement with the school.
Runge, who resigned April 30, will receive a $70,000 lump-sum payment, a $100,000 annuity and monthly payments of $11,667 for 2½
years.
"It was a mutually agreed-upon settlement by both parties after
a series of negotiations, and that's all we can say," university spokeswoman Maureen Shine said. "We're not at liberty to disclose
the nature of the negotiations."
Rohn Roberts, Runge's attorney, said the deal was reached after
face-to-face negotiations among Runge, athletic director Bill Moos
and their attorneys. The deal "obviously was satisfactory to both
parties or they wouldn't have signed it," he said.
Under the agreement, Runge relinquishes any claims against the
school. The university also agrees not to pursue claims against her
for any actions that took place while she was a Oregon coach. She would
be required to cooperate in defending the university if it is
investigated for incidents that occurred while she was coach.
A recent investigation by an outside law firm turned up 31 NCAA
violations in women's basketball that Moos characterized as minor.
The university believes they will not result in any significant
penalties.
Runge had two years remaining on a contract that paid her
$140,000 a year, the amount she will get in 30 monthly payments.
Runge agreed to resign after more than two months of turmoil
that began March 4 when eight players complained to Moos of verbal
abuse and asked that she be fired.
Five coaches who are candidates to replace Runge have recently
visited the Oregon campus.
They are Sherri Murrell of Pacific University; Bev Smith, a former Oregon star and Canadian national and Olympic coach; Melanie Balcomb
of Xavier University; Cheryl Burnett, head coach at Southwest
Missouri State; and Elaine Elliott, head coach at the University of
Utah.
Moos has said he hopes to make a decision by June 1.
