CHICAGO -- Cheryl Littlejohn, fired as the women's
basketball coach at Minnesota, has been named coach at Chicago
State.
Littlejohn, named to the post Friday, replaces Bridgett
Williams, who left to coach at Wright State.
Williams led the Cougars to a 10-18 record last season.
Littlejohn was 29-81 with a 7-57 record in the Big Ten in four
seasons with the Golden Gophers. She was fired by Minnesota last
month after an investigation uncovered evidence of NCAA violations.
Chicago State athletic director Al Avant said the alleged NCAA
violations were not significant enough to keep Littlejohn from
coaching again.
The violations that led to her firing included paying a player
between $200 and $300, interfering with a university investigation
into other violations and holding unauthorized practices.
The NCAA is investigating Minnesota's report on the 12
violations and could impose sanctions on the university.
Brenda Oldfield, the former coach at Ball State, was hired June
8 to succeed Littlejohn at Minnesota. The 2000 Mid-American
Conference coach of the year guided Ball State to a 16-13 record.
Over two seasons, she was 35-22.
Oldfield signed a five-year contract that called for $130,000
base salary, with additional incentives for performance. At 31, she
is the youngest head coach in the Big Ten.
Littlejohn was in the fourth year of a five-year contract worth
$101,800 annually when she was fired by Minnesota on May 14.
