DURHAM, N.C. -- Former Blue Devil Georgia Schweitzer has been named a temporary assistant at Duke, coach Gail Goestenkors announced Monday.

Schweitzer will serve an assistant coach until current assistant Joanne Boyle is able to return to the Blue Devils. Boyle was admitted to the hospital on Nov. 28 with bleeding in the brain, but is recovering and was released from the hospital on Dec. 12. There is no set time for her return.

Schweitzer will be an assistant coach in charge of scouting and will work with the team's guards.

"We feel so fortunate that Georgia was available to help us out," Goestenkors said. "She has the respect of our players and has added a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge to our program. Our guards in particular feel very comfortable with her."

A two-time ACC Player of the Year and a 2001 Kodak All-America selection, Schweitzer was drafted in the second round of the WNBA by the Miami Sol. She was then traded to the Minnesota Lynx where she started eight of her 24 games played and averaged 3.6 points and 2.1 rebounds. Schweitzer is due to report back to the Lynx on May 1, 2002.

"This is a wonderful opportunity," Schweitzer said. "I was really excited when coach Goestenkors asked me to come back and coach. I think since I was a player last year I can offer a unique perspective to the coaches and players."

Schweitzer led Duke to the Elite Eight as a senior and was a sophomore when the Blue Devils played in the 1999 national championship game. During her career in Durham, Duke won three ACC regular-season titles and its first ACC tournament title (1999).

In her senior season, Schweitzer averaged 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds, becoming the first player in Duke history and just the fifth in the ACC to notch more than 1,600 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 150 steals in a career.
