Campbell out indefinitely, Whitmore to coach

Associated Press

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Western Kentucky women's basketball coach Shawn Campbell was suspended indefinitely on Monday for inappropriate conduct.

Marti Whitmore, a first-year assistant and former head coach at St. Bonaventure, will take over as acting head coach for Tuesday night's game at No. 23 Georgia.

Campbell's fiery style has drawn five technical fouls this season and he's been ejected from two games. The Lady Toppers are 14-11 overall and 8-5 in the Sun Belt Conference entering Tuesday night's game.

"A series of disturbing events involving coach Campbell and his conduct throughout the season have forced us to take this disciplinary measure," Western Kentucky athletic director Wood Selig said in a statement.

"At this point we will continue to look into the leadership and direction of the Lady Topper program and make necessary decisions in the best interest of Lady Topper basketball."

Campbell took over the program last July after spending a season as associate head coach at Temple. He also spent 15 seasons as an assistant and then associate coach at Virginia.

Campbell could not immediately be reached for comment. Neither Whitmore nor any of the players will comment on the situation, a release from the school said.
