Feenstra scores 17 in Liberty's 13th straight win

Associated Press

ROANOKE, Va. -- Katie Feenstra was frustrated at halftime, having missed all five of her shots and scored just one point against a seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina team ill-equipped to stop her from scoring.

But Liberty's 6-foot-8 freshman didn't stay down long, scoring the Lady Flames' first 12 points of the second half and lifting Liberty to a 57-33 victory and its sixth consecutive Big South Conference championship.

Liberty becomes the second team to earn an automatic bid to the women's NCAA Tournament. Harvard, the Ivy League regular-season champion, secured its bid Friday.

"I didn't understand why my shots weren't falling, if I wasn't going up strong enough or what," Feenstra said after scoring 14 of her 15 points in the second half Saturday. "In the second half, I went up stronger, I posted up stronger and they started falling.

"That gave me a lot of confidence."

And it gave Coastal Carolina (11-18) no shot, especially not when Feenstra and her sister, 6-7 Meribeth, seemed to alter every shot put up by the Lady Chanticleers, who didn't use a player taller than 6-1.

Katie Feenstra outscored the Lady Chanticleers 14-13 after halftime, as Coastal Carolina hit only 5 of 32 shots, completing a 10-for-58 performance and the lowest scoring game in Big South tourney history.

"We've been working very hard on stopping the three and making them go down low, where we've got two 6-7, 6-8 girls," said Liberty guard Kristal Tharp, who added 12 points, 10 coming in the opening half.

"Anytime you shoot 17 percent, you can't beat a YMCA team," said Coastal Carolina coach Alan LeForce said. "Our players, instead of shooting the ball, were looking for where their big people were."

Nikki Reddick, who averaged 28 points to help make the Lady Chanticleers the first No. 7 seed to reach the championship game, was held to 13 points on 4-for-20 shooting. Crystal Brown had 12 on 2-for-16.

"It doesn't take a nuclear scientist to figure the outcome of the game" after looking at Coastal Carolina's shooting numbers, said Liberty coach Carey Green, who has been the coach for the last three titles.

The Lady Flames (23-7) won their 13th consecutive game overall, and beat the Lady Chanticleers for the 16th consecutive time. The victory also was Liberty's 15th in a row in the conference tournament.

"We could play them 10 times and maybe beat them once," LeForce said.

After getting just one point from Feenstra in the first half, Liberty pounded the ball inside at almost every opportunity after the break.

The last four points of Feenstra's 12 straight sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Lady Flames a 43-28 lead with 7:10 left, and the Lady Chanticleers scored just five more points, losing the half 33-13.

The Lady Chanticleers, who reached the championship game with two-point victories against No. 2 seed Elon and No. 6 Winthrop, were playing in their third championship game, all ending in losses to the Lady Flames.

"What we have to do, the rest of us, is catch up," LeForce said.

Liberty won its regular season meetings with the Lady Chanticleers by 21 and 29 points.
