Holt's 40 points not enough

Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sophomore Gerlonda Hardin matched her career high with 30 points, and Brooke Armistead scored 25 to lead Austin Peay to an 85-83 victory over Tennessee Tech in the Ohio Valley Conference women's tournament final Sunday.

Austin Peay (19-11) overcame a 40-point performance by Janet Holt to beat Tennessee Tech for the second year in a row for the tournament title, earning its second straight trip, and third trip overall, to the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee Tech used an 11-2 run to trim a 15-point deficit to 81-78 with 2:17 left, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Tennessee Tech (22-8) shot 51 percent in the second half, making 19 of 29 shots.

Austin Peay, which lost twice during the regular season to Tennessee Tech, shot a 69 percent from the field in the first half. Tennessee Tech hit only 37 percent in the opening half.

Holt, who set a tournament single-game scoring record, also set a career tournament scoring record with 250 points in four seasons.
