Charles comes on strong at the end for the Hawks

Associated Press

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Kelly Ann Charles scored all six of her points in the final 3½ minutes, including the go-ahead basket, and Hartford beat Stony Brook 50-47 Saturday to win the America East Conference tournament and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Hawks (16-14) were the first Hartford team -- men or women -- to reach the NCAA Tournament. Dorcas Miller and Kenitra Johnson had 15 points apiece for the Hawks.

Stony Brook (16-14) got 12 points from Sherry Jordan and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Danielle DeGiorgio.

Jordan sparked an 8-0 Stony Brook run with a pair of free throws. Hartford's Janeka Lopp argued a foul call on the next possession and was hit with a technical. Sarah Burkett made both technicals and Erika Shipley hit both free throws on the original foul.

Jordan capped the run with a driving layup with 6:21 remaining to give the Seawolves a 39-34 lead.

The teams traded baskets until Charles hit a layup and two free throws to pull Hartford to 43-42. After DeGiorgio's turnaround jumper gave the Seawolves a 47-44 lead with 1:16 left, Lopp responded with a 3-pointer to tie it.

The Hawks took the lead for good on Charles' wide-open layup with 18.8 seconds left.

Stony Brook had one more chance with 11 seconds left, but DeGiorgio missed a layup. Hartford's Ernestine Austin came up with the rebound, raced down court and threw up a shot that missed as time appeared to run out. But after a brief celebration by the team and dozens of fans at midcourt, officials ruled Austin had been fouled going to the basket and 1.5 seconds was put back on the clock.

Austin hit one of two free throws to cap the scoring.
