FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Colorado State will not rehire women's basketball coach Tom Collen, who was hired and then quickly forced to resign as Vanderbilt's coach over inaccuracies in an old resume. Colorado State athletics director Jeffrey Hathaway said Friday a new coach was in the best interest of the athletes and the program. Collen did not immediately return a telephone message left at his home Friday night. He quit as Vanderbilt's coach Thursday less than 24 hours after taking the job. University officials said they would have fired him if he hadn't withdrawn because a resume he submitted to Colorado State in 1997 incorrectly claimed he had earned two master's degrees from Miami of Ohio. Collen earned one master's degree but said he believed for 17 years he had earned two. "There was never any intention to deceive anybody. It was just a mistake that was never caught. Just an honest mistake," he said. Collen was 129-33 over five years at CSU, a school record, and took the Rams to the postseason each year. CSU went 24-7 this past season, with an opening round tourney loss to Tulane. | ||
