MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota point guard Lindsay Whalen was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media on Tuesday.

But Whalen, one of three Gophers who earned All-Big Ten honors, was beaten out for Player of the Year by Penn State's Kelly Mazzante. Whalen, a junior, and Mazzante were the only players to be unanimously selected to the first team.

Minnesota center Janel McCarville, last season's Freshman of the Year, was named to the media's first team and the coaches' second team while senior forward/guard Corrin Von Wald was selected to the third team by both the coaches and the media.

Whalen was a favorite to win Player of the Year after taking the award last season. But Mazzante was the leading scorer in the conference and led Penn State to the Big Ten regular-season title.

"She had a great year,'' said Whalen, who averages 21.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and two steals per game.

"I think either player could've gotten it,'' Minnesota coach Pam Borton said.

McCarville leads the nation in field goal percentage (67.7 percent) and averages 13 points per game. She ranks third in the Big Ten in rebounding with 8.9 boards a game.

Von Wald, the Gophers' best defensive player, won her first postseason award.
