On the way to L.A.

Editor's note: Ball State's Tamara Bowie, last season's Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season.

Nov. 19, 2001

Hello everyone! It's me again. Well, it has been another wonderful week here at Ball State. The last week went by rather fast for me. Maybe it was because I had so much to do with my classes and all.

Tamara Bowie
Tamara Bowie averaged 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds as a sophomore in 2000-01.
In my sports administration class Tuesday night, I had to give a presentation with my group. We had to develop and structure a high school athletic conference with each of us in charge of a specific area.

I was in charge of championships and awards. I think it went rather well. I also had to finish my web page for my computer class by Friday. So now I have my own BSU web page!

As busy as the week was, there is no better way to end a week of class than with your season opener. It was BSU and Wright State in the first game of the year for both teams. It was an exciting game, but it seemed to go a little slow. Even though we were having fun, the clock was moving in slow motion.

We struggled in the first half. Somebody had snapped a lid on the basket, but our defense carried us until we started hitting shots. We played really well in the second half and won 89-54. Johna Goff scored 24 points to lead us. I finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but I know I can play better. We all know we can play better.

After the game the entire team, support staff and family had a surprise party in Coach Roller's office for her first official win as a head coach. She thought she was waiting to do a live radio interview, while all of us went to her office to surprise her. It was a lot of fun and neat to see all the support from family and friends.

The weekend was pretty good, even though our football team lost at Northern Illinois for the MAC championship. The team can still end up being a co-champion with a win at Western Michigan this week.

Saturday's practice consisted of a whole lot of shooting drills. Hopefully we won't have another first half like we had Friday! Sunday was our day off, which allowed me to catch up on some homework.

This week is another busy one for us at Ball State. Thanksgiving for the BSU team will be in the lovely city of Los Angeles. We leave Wednesday morning for the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic. We play Arkansas State on Friday in the first game.

Well, good luck to everyone and I hope each of you have a beautiful Thanksgiving. See you next week!

One Love,

Bowie
