A pair of New York Mets prospects were scratched from the starting lineup 10 minutes before Friday's Triple-A Buffalo game, signaling a trade might be brewing involving the major league club.
Two sources -- one with ties to the organization, one formerly with the organization -- indicated the Seattle Mariners are the team involved in dialogue with the Mets.
A source close to 21-year-old outfielder Fernando Martinez, who was one of the two players scratched from the Bisons' lineup, said he will be called up to the Mets.
The second prospect, 20-year-old infielder Ruben Tejada, also is being called up, ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas confirmed Saturday morning.
The Mets repeatedly have tried to trade second baseman Luis Castillo, who is in the third season of a four-year, $25 million deal.
Mets GM Omar Minaya, who attended the Mets' 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, would not comment about the minor league players being scratched.
Martinez, 21, heated up the past week after recently enduring a 3-for-33 rut. He is hitting .255 with 12 homers and 33 RBIs in 68 games this season with the Bisons.
Tejada is hitting .280 with one homer and 16 RBIs in Triple-A this year. He also has played in 35 games with the Mets this season, subbing for Jose Reyes and Castillo while they were on the disabled list with injuries.
