The general managers of all 30 Major League Baseball teams will gather for three days of meetings this week in Orlando, but don't expect Yankees GM Brian Cashman to bring back any goodies for his team.
According to Cashman, little if any player personnel business will get done at this year's GM meetings, which will run between Tuesday and Thursday.
"We're in meetings between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day,'' Cashman said by phone on Monday from Newark Airport, where he was awaiting his flight to Orlando. "There's not going to be much time to discuss team business with anyone.''
Besides, he said, "Most of the conversations [regarding possible player moves] have already taken place by telephone.''
Cashman declined to say which players he might be interested in, but a baseball source told ESPN New York that one free-agent the Yankees are not interested in is Boston Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez because of concerns about his defensive liabilities. Currently, the Yankees plan to give 20-year-old prospect Jesus Montero every opportunity to win the everyday catching job in spring training as Jorge Posada shifts to designated hitter.
Cashman also said nothing had substantially changed in the team's negotiations with its own free agents, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte.
"I don't expect any of those deals will get done this week,'' he said.
The agenda for the GM meetings is set by Major League Baseball and is expected to include discussions of instant replay, umpire performance and other administrative issues.
