Sources: Chris Young, Mets talking

The New York Mets are deep into talks with veteran right-hander Chris Young, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Monday.

The San Diego Padres declined their $8.5 million option on Young for next season in early November.

General manager Jed Hoyer said the day after the season ended that the Padres were open to bringing Young back at a lower amount.

Young was sidelined most of the season with a strained right shoulder, his third significant injury in as many seasons. He returned to the rotation in the season's final weeks, finishing the year 2-0 with a .90 ERA in four starts.
