Johan Santana has shoulder fatigue

New York Mets left-hander Johan Santana will remain with the Mets in New York to rest his fatigued left shoulder, and will be re-evaluated at the end of the homestand, GM Sandy Alderson said Friday before the Mets' game against the Atlanta Braves.

He has been diagnosed with fatigue in his surgically repaired left shoulder and does not have new damage in the area, the team announced Thursday, when he was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan after complaining of discomfort in his shoulder earlier this week.

Santana tossed three scoreless innings July 28 for Class A St. Lucie in his first minor league rehab start. He is attempting to return from Sept. 14, 2010, surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

If everything checks out, Santana will return to Port St. Lucie to resume throwing side sessions. Alderson did not want to rule out his return in 2011. He maintained that there was value in Santana pitching this season, in either the major or minor leagues.

"If I pitch this season that would be great and if I don't, as long as I feel good and healthy that's what I'm looking for," Santana said.

He is not sure when he will begin throwing again.
