NEW YORK -- With Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's current contract scheduled to run out at the end of the month, would he be interested in the new Boston Red Sox opening?
"I have a job," Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday.
Cashman is expected to keep that job. He has said he wants to return, and Yankees president Randy Levine has said that the team wants to continue the relationship as well. Nothing official has been agreed upon yet, but the expectations are that Cashman will sign a new deal in the near future.
With Theo Epstein almost certainly leaving for the Chicago Cubs, Red Sox assistant GM Ben Cherington is considered the leading candidate to replace him. It would be a fascinating turn of events if the Red Sox showed some interest in Cashman, which they could do just to raise the ante for the Yankees.
Cashman said he had "no reaction whatsoever" to Epstein leaving for the Cubs because the deal wasn't officially announced. In the past, Cashman has always praised Epstein, whom he considers a good friend.
With Cashman expected to remain with the Yankees, his first order of business likely would be to figure out how to keep CC Sabathia, who can opt out of his contract three days after the World Series.
