Mets name Bob Geren bench coach

Former Oakland Athletics manager Bob Geren has been hired as bench coach for the New York Mets.

"Bob Geren's experience as a former manager and bench coach will be a great fit for us," manager Mets Terry Collins said in a statement. "Adding a former major league catcher like Bob to our staff will be ideal."

Geren had a 334-376 record as Oakland's manager from 2007 until his dismissal midway through this past season.

Former Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman also interviewed for the position.

The Mets have now filled manager Terry Collins' entire 2012 staff with the exception of first base coach. Tim Teufel is the new third base coach and Ricky Bones is the new bullpen coach, while pitching coach Dan Warthen and hitting coach Dave Hudgens remain from this past season.
