Source: Mets to sign Brandon Lyon

The New York Mets were closing in on a deal with right-hander Brandon Lyon on Sunday, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Lyon would become the latest in a flurry of late signings to bolster the team's bullpen.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson confirmed the Mets' interest in Lyon on Monday when he said that free agents Michael Bourn and Lyon are essentially the only two players the Mets could add before spring training.

The Mets also recently have added veteran right-handers Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins and left-hander Pedro Feliciano to minor league contracts.

Lyon, 33, went a combined 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 67 relief appearances last season with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.

Bourn still appears a long shot, but the Mets remain engaged with agent Scott Boras. Alderson would not say whether there was a drop-dead date for negotiating with the outfielder, although he acknowledged a preference to have a resolution sooner than later.

Barring something that would happen with Bourn, we'll open with the guys we have," Alderson said.
