NEW YORK -- The NBA has rescinded a technical foul called against Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks, lowering his season total to nine.
Stoudemire was T'd up in Orlando last Thursday night for his demonstrative yelling after blocking a shot by Orlando's Gilbert Arenas. The Knicks appealed the technical, and the league office ruled in their favor over the weekend.
Stoudemire ranks second in the NBA in technical fouls, trailing only Orlando's Dwight Howard (who has 11 after having two technicals rescinded).
Players are automatically suspended for one game after receiving their 16th technical foul of the season, and the one-game suspensions keep coming after technical fouls No. 18, 20, 22, etc.
"Obviously if he gets closer he'll have to watch it, and I think Amare can -- and would. But I'm not worried about it yet. It's still a ways away," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said.
Including the technical he received Thursday, Stoudemire had been given a tech in five of the Knicks' past nine games entering Sunday's matinee against Indiana.
"He gets in the habit of he likes to clap after something. They were disallowing that at the beginning, now they're a little bit more lenient on that. But most big guys, they get banged around. He goes to the hole hard, and sometimes he feels like he gets fouled. But that's all big guys," D'Antoni said. "The battle is tough, and it's hard to referee those things. I think it's just the reaction. He plays the game passionately, and sometimes he goes over the line."
