Jets cut Jacoby Ford, 5 others

The New York Jets pared their roster to 75 players on Sunday by releasing six, including wide receiver/kickoff returner Jacoby Ford.

The former Oakland Raiders speedster signed a one-year contract in March with the hope of winning a spot on a receiving corps in transition, but he disappointed in the preseason -- three catches for 19 yards in three games.

With rookie punt returner Jalen Saunders out indefinitely with an undisclosed medical issue, Ford got a chance to return punts -- but he had a muff Friday night against the New York Giants.

The Jets' fallback option at punt returner is Jeremy Kerley, who has extensive experience. Clyde Gates becomes the leading candidate at kickoff returner.

The team also released cornerback Ras-I Dowling, a former second-round pick of the New England Patriots. Others released were wide receiver Michael Campbell, tight end Colin Anderson, fullback Chad Young and defensive end Anthony Grady.
