Jets release Aaron Maybin

Mired in a three-game losing streak, the New York Jets made an attention-grabbing move Tuesday, releasing pass-rusher Aaron Maybin.

Maybin, whom the Jets trumpeted as their top edge rusher at the start of the season, failed to record a sack in the first eight games and was inactive Sunday in their 28-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

After getting cut last season by the Buffalo Bills, who selected him 11th overall in the 2009 draft, Maybin revived his career with the Jets. He led the team with six sacks as a situational pass-rusher, and he talked in the preseason of expanding his role.

It never materialized. Maybin took only 119 defensive snaps and recorded only one tackle.

The Jets needed a roster spot to sign former Chicago Bears running back Kahlil Bell, according to a league source. Bell could play Sunday against the St. Louis Rams because of injuries to Bilal Powell (concussion) and Joe McKnight (high-ankle sprain).

Maybin created headlines a couple of weeks ago, when he told ESPNNewYork the defense was targeting Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush.

Maybin said, "We want to knock him out, but we want to do it legally." He was mocked by Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, who said Maybin wouldn't play enough to get the opportunity.

Pouncey turned out to be correct. Maybin played only five snaps against the Dolphins, and was benched last Sunday in favor of Ricky Sapp, who had no NFL experience.

The Jets liked Maybin's potential and signed him to a one-year, $1.015 million contract last offseason, when he was a restricted free agent. It included a $325,000 signing bonus and a $75,000 roster bonus.

Though he never complained publicly, Maybin became frustrated with his lack of playing time. Even though he didn't produce any big plays, he was credited with nine quarterback hits, fourth highest on the team. Without Maybin, the Jets don't have a true speed rusher.

As a team, the Jets have only 16 sacks, with no player having more than two.

The Jets also placed nickel back Isaiah Trufant on injured reserve, a league source said. Trufant injured his knee on his first play in Sunday's loss to Seattle.
