Negotiations have reached a critical stage for Tennessee Titans cornerback Samari Rolle, who is trying to sign a long-term contract extension.

He practiced Monday but planned to talk with agent Lamont Smith about his next step, which could be leaving Nashville before Tuesday's practice if significant progress wasn't made in negotiations.

"I don't want everybody to view me as another brat complaining about not making enough money," Rolle said. "My whole thing is I was told one thing, and I came to camp on time like I was supposed to.

"We're not going to get anything done, fine tell me that. We'll drop the issue, and I'll play this year out."

The Titans listed signing Rolle to a new contract as one of their priorities for the offseason. They signed receiver Derrick Mason, also represented by Smith, and quarterback Steve McNair to new deals before camp.

General manager Floyd Reese said he was waiting for Smith's latest counteroffer Monday afternoon, and he doesn't see any good in Rolle walking out when the Titans intend to finalize a contract.

"He came here in good faith. I think he'll continue to be here in good faith," Reese said. "Our objective is to get ready for the season."

But Smith said Monday night that he had sent his latest offer to Reese and wasn't any closer to the deal that had been promised by the start of the regular season. The Titans' final exhibition is Thursday night at Detroit with their season opener on Sept. 9 at home against Miami.

Smith tried to start negotiations in March but didn't hear back from the Titans until July, and he said he and Rolle were disappointed at the slow pace of negotiations, which prompted them to consider leaving the Titans.

"It's weighing heavy on him. He said he's at risk of injury, and it's affecting his play on the field," Smith said.

Rolle, a starter in the Pro Bowl last season, has been negotiating one of the richest cornerback contracts in NFL history and wants to stay with the Titans. He was a restricted free agent this year and signed his one-year, $1.488 million tender.

By missing a day or two if there is no settlement, Rolle will be making a statement about the importance of getting a contract done before the start of the regular season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks, despite being under contract, stayed away from Bucs training camp 10 days before returning and eventually agreeing to a four-year contract extension last week worth between $27 million and $28 million.

The Titans have already spent in excess of $25 million in signing bonuses reaching contract extensions with quarterback Steve McNair, left tackle Brad Hopkins, wide receiver Derrick Mason and guard Benji Olson. They also acquired defensive end Kevin Carter in a trade from the St. Louis Rams, a deal that included an option bonus.
