Christie giving Bills kicking dilemma

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

John Clayton takes a look at injuries around the NFL heading into opening weekend:

Buffalo update:
Bills coach Gregg Williams will have to wait until Saturday afternoon to determine if kicker Steve Christie can play Sunday's home-opener against the Saints. Christie had to rest a right groin injury for the second consecutive day, which may put Williams in the position to bring Jake Arians off the practice squad. Earlier this week, the Bills brought in some veteran kickers for workout because Christie didn't have a great summer of kicking. Arians has a powerful young leg. He was cut by Atlanta. It's not out of the question for the Bills to keep two kickers on the roster if they sign Arians to the 53-man squad. On Saturday, the Bills will retire Andre Reed, their longtime great wide receiver.

Philadelphia update:
Eagles cornerback Troy Vincent remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams because of the hyperextended knee suffered during Thursday's practice in a collision with linebacker Mike Caldwell. Vincent didn't practice Friday and received treatment for the knee. Coach Any Reid will make a gameday decision whether Vincent will play against the Rams Sunday. If he can't, the job goes to Al Harris.

Chicago update:
Perhaps the biggest surprise after the Bears practice Friday is that Marcus Robinson, sidelined since early training camp with a bad back, was upgraded from questionable to probable. Still, don't count on him playing. Coach Dick Jauron still plans to start Marty Booker and Dez White. First-round choice David Terrell may be the third receiver. Where that leaves Robinson, who has missed a lot of practice since having back surgery, is unknown. Jauron indicated that second-round choice Anthony Thomas, bothered by a knee injury, will play and back up James Allen. The Bears visit the Ravens.

Miami update:
Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt says that defensive tackle Tim Bowens is still slowed by some knee problems, mostly arthritis in his non-surgically repaired knee, but the coach said Bowens should be ready for Sunday night's opener against the Titans. Daryl Gardener's back has held up during this week's practices and he should start. The Dolphins have 19 players on the injury list but the only players ruled out for the game will be wide receiver Dedric Ward and free safety Shawn Wooden. The Dolphins added quarterback Cade McNown, who is questionable after injuring his left wrist in Thursday's practice.

Baltimore update:
Ravens cornerback Duane Starks doesn't look as though his sore knee will heal in time for Sunday's opener against the Bears. Chris McAllister, the other starting cornerback, should be OK. He worked on his sore ankle Friday while Starks had to sit out. James Trapp probably gets the nod if Starks can't go. Right tackle Sammy Williams was added to the injury list with a chest injury, but he is probable. If Williams can't go, the Ravens won't start Erik Williams, who is still getting himself in shape. They would move Kipp Vickers to right tackle and promote guard Bennie Anderson to the starting line up.

Seattle update:
Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren selected Trent Dilfer as the backup to Matt Hasselbeck this week. Dilfer beat out Brock Huard although it's not out of the question for Holmgren to alternate backups week-to-week. Darrell Jackson and Koren Robinson will start at receiver. Todd Weiner starts at right tackle instead of Chris McIntosh, who has a neck injury.

Dallas update:
The Cowboys have only one injury of note -- backup Tony Dixon, who practiced Friday on his sore hamstring. They also had one missing player -- defensive tackle Dimitrius Underwood. Underwood, who undergoes treatment for a bipolar disorder, was given an excused absence from Friday's practice. No word as to why he was excused.

St. Louis update:
The Rams now have nine new starters on their defensive side. Coach Mike Martz named Chidi Ahanotu as the starting defensive end ahead of Leonard Little. Grant Wistrom, the other defensive end, is expected to miss the game because of a knee injury. Sean Moran gets the start, meaning that the Rams have four different starters on the defensive line for the Eagles game -- Moran, Ahanotu, Jeff Zgonina and Brian Young. First-round pick Damione Lewis is playing behind Young.

New York Giants update:
The Giants still hold hope of using cornerback Jason Sehorn for the Monday night game against the Broncos even though he didn't practice again Friday. The Giants are going day-to-day with Sehorn, whom they will need in trying to stop the Broncos' passing offense. The Giants list Sehorn as probable. Wide receiver Ike Hilliard did little Friday on his foot injury, making it unlikely for him to be ready for the Monday night game. Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin didn't practice much Friday. On Thursday, Griffin, who was nursing an ankle injury, left practice early because of pain in the ankle.

New York Jets update:
Jets coach Herman Edwards is making an interesting gamble going into Sunday's game against the Colts. He has only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster -- Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington. The third quarterback is punter Tom Tupa, who is surprisingly going to be available on the active roster. Tupa has a hip flexor that prevents him from punting, but Tupa is valuable as a holder for kicker John Hall. Handling the punting duties will be Tommy Parks. New return specialist Chad Morton returned to practice after missing two days with a stomach flu and should be able to play.

Indianapolis update:
The Colts upgraded defensive end Chad Bratzke from questionable to probable after he practiced all week with his chest injury. The prognosis is also good for wide receiver Reggie Wayne, the team's second-round choice, who has an ankle injury. He's listed as questionable, but he's practiced all week.

New Orleans update:
Saints middle linebacker DeShone Myles has had knee problems all his career. He has problems again. He re-injured the knee to a point that the Saints went out Friday to re-sign linebacker Phil Clarke to have some depth. Guard Wally Williams was pronounced fit by coach Jim Haslett Friday. Neck problems that have bothered him in the past flaired up this week, but Williams practiced Friday.

Pittsburgh update:
Expect Deshea Townsend to make his fifth NFL start Sunday when the Steelers visit the Jaguars. Starting cornerback Chad Scott didn't practice again Friday because of a knee injury and isn't expected to play. He's listed as doubtful. Fullback Dan Kreider (calf) also didn't practice and isn't expected to play.

Detroit update:
The Lions' secondary is a mess for Sunday's game against the Packers. They did get good news when defensive tackle Luther Elliss practiced on his surgically repaired elbow and was pronounced fit enough to start. The secondary problems will go down to game time to determine if safety Ron Rice will play with a broken toe in his foot. That's unlikely. Backup cornerback Robert Bailey will probably miss the game because of an ankle injury. Cornerback Bryant Westbrook is still needing more time on his Achilles, which was surgically repaired last year. Expect backup LaMar Campbell, a converted cornerback, and recently signed Tommy Bennett to start at safety Sunday. Rice and Bailey didn't practice Friday. Todd Lyght and Terry Fair will start at cornerback. The Lions expect to play rookie defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.

Tampa Bay update:
The Bucs had a scare Friday when wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson twisted an ankle in practice. The injury is considered minor and he is expected to start against the Cowboys. The Bucs will be thin on the offensive line. Todd Washington takes over for Jeff Christy, who won't play because of a knee injury.

Jacksonville update:
The injury news is good out of Jacksonville. Six of 10 key injured players all practiced Friday, and coach Tom Coughlin expects them all to play. That list includes left tackle Tony Boselli (knee), cornerback Fernando Bryant (shoulder) and wide receiver Keenan McCardell (hernia). They have all been listed as questionable. Tight end Kyle Brady (leg), middle linebacker T.J. Slaughter (shoulder) and wide receiver Alvis Whitted (ankle) also practiced. They are probable. Out for the game are defensive end Tony Brackens (knee), running back Elvis Joseph (hamstring), center John Wade (foot) and linebacker Eric Westmoreland (knee).

Cleveland update:
The Browns plan to start Kevin Johnson and rookie Quincy Morgan with Dennis Northcutt (shoulder bruise) doubtful and wide receiver JaJuan Dawson (hand) probable. Dawson may play because he did practice on Friday. Northcutt didn't practice. Strong safety Marquis Smith probably won't play because of his broken hand, leaving the strong safety spot to Earl Little.

Atlanta update:
Falcons coach Dan Reeves upgraded defensive tackle Travis Hall to probable. All week he had been questionable with an ankle injury. That good news was countered by the bad news that free safety Ronnie Bradford rolled an ankle in practice Friday and may not be able to play. If he can't go, the Falcons will start Gerald McBurroughs.

Carolina update:
It's all but certain that the Panthers will hold out wide receiver Patrick Jefffers, who has a bad knee. In fact, it's not out of the question for them to wait a couple weeks because the Panthers have a couple of opening games on artificial turf. His absence puts Donald Hayes into the starting lineup with Mushin Muhammad. Coach George Seifert still hasn't announced whether Rashard Anderson or Jimmy Hitchcock will start at cornerback although most people think it will be Anderson. Backup halfback Richard Huntley isn't expected to play having just come back from hamstring problems for the past several weeks. Jeffers and Huntley each practiced Friday.

New England update:
Patriots coach Bill Belichick doesn't know what he has in the middle of the defense to stop the Bengals running attack. First-round choice Richard Seymour didn't practice Friday because of tightness in a leg. He was limited on Wednesday and has sat out the last two practices. So has middle linebacker Ted Johnson, who has a leg injury. Center Mike Compton (calf) and cornerback Ty Law (foot) practiced and are fine. Belichick's big decision if Seymour can't go is whether to start veteran Brandon Mitchell at nose tackle or use undrafted rookie Jace Sayler.

Cincinnati update:
The Bengals' problems at defensive end continued when Vaughn Booker missed Friday's practice with several injuries -- a sore knee, a tight hamstring and a broken finger. While coach Dick LeBeau still believes Booker will play, he has to worry a little bit. With Justin Smith holding out and John Copeland being placed on the injured reserve list, the Bengals had to re-sign Jevon Langford and promoted Reinard Wilson to the starting lineup. Booker is the other starter. Willie Anderson, the right tackle, has been added as probable with a back injury but he should be fine.

Washington update:
The only scratch from the Redskins lineup will be linebacker Robert Jones, who has a knee injury.

Green Bay update:
Packers coach Mike Sherman will have to make a gameday decision about whether or not to start defensive tackle Santana Dotson, who is coming off a torn quad from last year. Second-round choice Robert Ferguson, a wide receiver, won't play because a tight quad and a concussion. Neither will first-round choice Jamal Reynolds, a defensive end, who has a sore knee.

Oakland update:
The Raiders are uncertain whether defensive tackle Roderick Coleman will play Sunday against the Chiefs. Coleman is the key replacement for Darrell Russell, who has a four-game suspension for violations of the drug policy.
