Marvin Lewis vowed a changed Bengals organization after taking over as head coach. He wasn't kidding. Cincinnati added its fourth new defensive starter in less than a week by reaching a four-year, $14.4 million agreement Sunday with former Raiders cornerback Tory James.
James was considering re-signing with the Raiders or possibly joining the Vikings. But the Bengals' offer, plus Lewis' strong pitch to bring him to Cincinnati, convinced James to accept. James deal includes a $3.7 million signing bonus and a first-year salary of a little more than $2 million. He was among six veterans Oakland released on Feb. 27 to get the team down to the salary cap. James joins middle linebacker Kevin Hardy and defensive linemen John Thornton and Carl Powell in the revamped Bengals' defense. James had 45 tackles last season with four interceptions. He has 19 career interceptions, including nine in the past two seasons with the Raiders. He will turn 30 on May 18 and has played in 94 NFL games with Denver and Oakland.
