| Urlacher |
Dick Jauron's new plan for Brian Urlacher gave the Bears the flexibility to pass on pass-rushing defensive end Terrell Suggs with the fourth pick and trade down for defensive end Michael Haynes and quarterback Rex Grossman. Before the draft, Jauron came up with idea of using Urlacher in some of departed linebacker Rosevelt Colvin's old pass-rushing duties. Because Haynes doesn't rush off the corner as well as Suggs, Urlacher will get plenty of chances in training camp to go against linemen along the line of scrimmage.
Weighty issues for Dorsey
Weighing 30 pounds heavier than he did in early January, Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey looked like a new man in April, visiting five teams for workouts, including the 49ers, who selected him in the seventh round. Now at 215, the 6-foot-4 Dorsey has been eating five meals a day and lifting weights, improving his leg strength and throwing velocity. 49ers coach Dennis Erickson and others were so impressed with his tight spirals that they told Dorsey to keep it quiet so other teams wouldn't learn that Dorsey might be one of the draft's biggest sleepers.
Dayne working for trade
Ron Dayne knows that not being traded by the Giants before the end of the draft might have lessened his chances of getting shipped, but he plans to work his way off the roster. He's currently training in Cleveland, pulling sleds and running while receiving resistance from large elastic bands. His weight has gone from the 260s to the 240s, and he's thinking about showing up at Giants minicamp as a gesture to facilitate a trade. He has missed all of the Giants off-season program.
Secondary source of youth
Lack of speed in the secondary forced Marty Schottenheimer to use "Cover 2" zone about 35 percent of the time last season because the Chargers -- ranked last against the pass -- couldn't cover anybody. That's why he didn't mind going young with the selections of cornerbacks Sammy Davis and Drayton Florence and safety Terrence Kiel. Schottenheimer compares Florence to former Chiefs corner James Hasty, and Davis and Florence will team with Quentin Jammer and Tay Cody to form the league's youngest cornerback unit, allowing the Chargers to use more man-to-man.
Running on empty
Led by Willis McGahee of the Bills, Larry Johnson of the Chiefs and Musa Smith of the Ravens, most of the 12 halfbacks drafted this year went to already full backfields. Eight of the 12 halfbacks taken went to teams that have established 1,000-yard runners. Fourth-rounder Domanick Davis of Houston, competing against Stacey Mack, may be the only runner this year to compete early for playing time.
