Rogers to see hand specialist Wednesday

By John Clayton

Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers suffered an open dislocation of his left ring finger Wednesday morning when he was trying to catch a pass while being covered by a defender.

"I was going up for a pass, I had the defender on me, and I was trying to make a play,'' Rogers said.

The bone in the top part of the finger popped through the skin and needed two stitches to mend. He is taking antibiotics to prevent any infection. Though he is only expected to miss a couple days of practice, Rogers will visit a hand specialist Wednesday to determine when he can return.

"Nothing's broken and everything is in place,'' Lions coach Steve Mariucci said. "If it's a matter of the stitches holding up, then he might be back in a couple of days.''

Rogers was running first-team flanker, the featured receiving position in the West Coast offense, and was drawing praise from coaches and teammates for his ability to learn and execute on the field. Rogers was insistent with his agent, Kevin Poston, to make sure he wasn't a holdout and had his contract signed.

Rogers will be joined at the hand specialist Wednesday by tight end John Owens, who broke the fourth metacarpal bone in a hand. He will be sidelined indefinitely.

"I'll bounce back from it,'' Rogers said.
