Less than 12 hours after his agent told ESPN.com that he would seek an expeditious resolution to the uncertain employment status of Dennis Green with the Minnesota Vikings, the matter was concluded swiftly Friday, with the parties reaching an agreement in principle on a settlement that will end the coach's 10-year tenure with the franchise. ESPN.com confirmed through agent Ray Anderson and a Vikings source that, while there remain a few details to be finalized, the settlement will be completed by Friday afternoon. The settlement means that Green, the NFL's longest-tenured coach in terms of continuous service with the same club, will not coach Monday night's regular-season finale at Baltimore. It is believed that offensive line assistant Mike Tice will serve as interim head coach. ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported Thursday afternoon that Green would be fired, barring a dramatic change of heart by Vikings owner Red McCombs. "We're working on the language (of the settlement) right now," Anderson told ESPN.com Friday morning, "and it should be finished in a few hours." Anderson said Green would apprise his staff of the developments and then address the media in his normal Friday briefing. The agent declined to comment on terms of the settlement, but it is believed Green will receive all or nearly all of the $6 million due him for the final two seasons of his contract. Sources said one stipulation of the settlement being sought by the Vikings is that Green not coach in the NFL for two years. He would be free, sources said, to pursue a job in the college ranks. But such a stipulation, in practical terms, would only mean that Minnesota would retain a right to seek compensation from any NFL team that attempted to hire Green. The settlement talks were initiated early Friday morning by team president Gary Woods, who phoned Anderson after reading of his desire for a quick resolution. The two men agreed that it was in the best interest of the franchise to cut ties, that even after some Minneapolis-area media outlets cited sources close to McCombs as contending that no decision had yet been made about Green's future. Green was 97-62 in 10 seasons as Vikings coach, reaching the NFC championship game twice in the last four years. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
