NEW YORK -- While they would not divulge a dollar figure, league and team sources confirmed Wednesday night that Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins will draw a substantial fine for a helmet-first hit on New York Giants wide receiver Ike Hilliard in Monday night's game.
The fine could be announced as early as Thursday but, barring a change of heart by league officials, Dawkins will not be suspended. It comes in the wake of a $75,000 levied by the NFL on Wednesday against Dallas Cowboys safety Darren Woodson. The play occurred on an incomplete pass in the third quarter, when Hilliard stretched out for the errant aerial, and Dawkins leveled him with a collision to the shoulder and chest of the wide receiver. Dawkins was penalized 15 yards on the play for unnecessary roughness against a receiver who was in a defenseless position at the time. Hilliard suffered a dislocated right shoulder, and torn labrum and pectoralis muscles. The six-year veteran will have surgery in about a month, once the swelling subsides, and will miss the rest of the season. Dawkins acknowledged on Tuesday it was a "stupid play" on his part. A disappointed Hilliard, who had come back from a series of foot injuries to enjoy a solid year, said it was not his place to determine of the hit was late or overly aggressive. "It's irrelevant whether or not it was dirty," Hilliard said. "Determining that won't make any difference to my shoulder right now." Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
