| NEW YORK -- Bill Parcells told Woody Johnson he doesn't want
to return as coach of the New York Jets next season.
Parcells and the Jets' prospective new owner had a lengthy meeting on Friday, during which the former coach reiterated his desire to stay retired. Johnson then asked Parcells to reconsider during the weekend before making a final decision. However, Parcells, the team's chief of football operations, left Johnson with the "distinct impression" he was against returning to the sidelines. If Parcells doesn't return as coach, Al Groh is considered the front-runner as his replacement. Parcells stepped down on Jan. 3 and his hand-chosen successor, Bill Belichick, quit the next day. The NFL conducted a day-long hearing on Belichick's grievance Thursday as the coach sought clarification of his contract status. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue is expected to issue a ruling this week. Johnson can't conduct any official team business until the purchase from the estate of the late Leon Hess is approved. The NFL is expected to grant the approval during an owners meeting Tuesday. | ALSO SEE Report: Jets willing to make Parcells highest-paid coach NFL conducts hearing on Belichick contract Johnson & Johnson heir buys Jets for $635 million Mort Report: Tuna might resurface![]() | |||||
