| EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- One day after missing a potential game-tying field goal as time expired, Jets place-kicker John Hall is in jeopardy of losing his job.
Coach Al Groh said Monday the New York Jets will sign Brett Conway to compete with Hall for the kicking job in the regular-season finale Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Conway will start practicing with the Jets on Wednesday, Groh said.
Hall missed a 35-yard field goal with nine seconds left in a 10-7 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He also missed a 47-yarder.
The Jets will create a roster spot by placing linebacker Bryan Cox on injured reserve. Cox suffered a broken right leg against the Lions and underwent surgery Monday.
Cox limped off the field after the third play of the second quarter, a
2-yard run by Detroit's James Stewart. He was replaced by Dwayne Gordon.
A 10-year veteran and one of the leaders of New York's defense,
Cox had six sacks among his 76 tackles going into the game.
A free agent after this season, Cox isn't
expected to return to the Jets. He has not spoken with the media
this year, but his agent, Cliff Brady, said Cox wants to play in
2001.
"He's a leader in the locker room and the meeting room, and off
the field as well," said Gordon. "He'll still be able to help us, but because
we have so many veterans on defense, we don't always know who will
step up. But somebody will."
Cox will be most difficult to replace in the pass-rush package,
where he often played at defensive end. Groh said Dorian
Boose, a second-round draft choice in 1998, probably would take
over at that spot.
