Shanahan says signing Rice not 'feasible'

DENVER -- San Francisco receiver Jerry Rice expects to play for another team next season, but don't expect it to be the Denver Broncos.

The Hall of Fame-bound Rice, who holds 33 NFL records, was honored by the 49ers last week in their final home game of the season.

Both Rice and 49ers general manager Bill Walsh believe the team will release him in June because of salary cap constraints, although Rice expects to play at least one more season in another city.

To pay Rice the salary he merits "would not be feasible for us," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday.

"I think the reason Jerry Rice is a big question mark right now is the salary cap," Shanahan said. "Everybody is interested in Jerry Rice. The question is, who is willing to pay the type of money that he is going to get on his next contract.

"The 49ers would love to keep him, not only because of what he's done but because of how productive he is right now. But that's one of the disadvantages of working with that salary cap. You have to make tough decisions and you have to decide which direction you're going to go."
