| CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The cable channel that broadcast live
former NFL and University of Colorado player Rae Carruth's murder
trial said it was the most-watched trial since the O.J. Simpson
murder case.
"It did outstandingly well in ratings," said Marlene Dann,
Court TV's vice president for daytime programming. "Our experience
has been consistently that athletes in trouble get a lot of
interest."
Ratings grew until the week of closing arguments in mid-January,
when the coverage was watched in about 327,000 U.S. households. The
Jan. 19 verdict was seen in about 500,000 homes.
ABC's news magazine "20/20" planned to televise a segment on
the case Friday night, including the first extensive interview with
Saundra Adams, the victim's mother.
Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder in the November
1999 shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams. He
was convicted, however, of conspiracy to commit murder and two
related charges.
The former Carolina Panthers receiver was sentenced Monday to at
least 18 years, 11 months in prison. | ALSO SEE
