Denver Broncos wide receiver Eddie Kennison was arrested and cited with three misdemeanors Sunday morning after a dispute with a security guard at a Baton Rouge nightclub, police said.
Kennison said he was handcuffed and detained at a police precinct for about three hours after he argued with the security guard at Club Raggs. He was cited with inciting to riot and two other misdemeanors relating to his refusal to leave the club's property, police spokesman Don Kelly said.
"He had an entourage with him and ... he was trying to get his entourage all riled up," Kelly said. "He just would not leave and he would not do anything to comply with the officer's instructions."
Kelly said he wasn't sure why Kennison was issued a summons and released instead of being booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Kennison said he and friends arrived at the club about 12:30 a.m. and the security guard told them to leave because their clothes didn't meet the club's dress code. When Kennison refused to leave immediately, the guard pulled a handgun and called police, he said.
Kennison said police had no reason to arrest him.
"They wrongfully abused their rights as policemen," Kennison said.
Kennison, a star at LSU who played for the New Orleans Saints in 1999, was in Baton Rouge to attend Saturday's LSU-Tulane game Saturday. He played with the Broncos in their game against the 49ers on Friday night.
Sunday afternoon, Kennison went to Lake Charles to watch his high school alma mater, Washington-Marion, play a football game, said his agent John Hamilton. Hamilton said he was expected to attend Broncos practice Monday. |
