NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans listed Steve McNair as questionable for Sunday's game with Cincinnati because of a bruised shoulder.
"My health is very unpredictable," McNair said quietly as he held his right arm against his body Monday.
"In the past, I have been a quick healer to where I go out and try to compete if I can. If I feel like I can go out and get the job done, I might play. But at this point in time, it's questionable I'll be able to do anything this week."
It's the same shoulder in which McNair had a mysterious infection last winter that puzzled doctors and kept him from making his first Pro Bowl appearance last February. Coach Jeff Fisher said exams showed McNair only bruised the shoulder, although they planned an MRI as a precaution.
McNair was hurt Sunday night when Dolphins tackle Jermaine Haley drove him into the turf as he released a touchdown pass in the third quarter of the Titans' 31-23 loss to Miami.
Fisher said McNair won't practice Wednesday or Thursday. If he doesn't practice Friday, then backup Neil O'Donnell would start for the seventh time in the past three seasons.
McNair looked exhausted after a sleepless night where the soreness in his shoulder kept waking him up, and he said he had no strength and couldn't lift his arm at all Monday. He had to use his left hand to brush his teeth.
"Hopefully, in the next day or two, things will settle down, and hopefully, I'll be able to get a better evaluation and see how long it will be before I'm able to throw or get the range of motion back," McNair said.
For McNair, his latest injury easily is the most frustrating of his career. He played through a couple seasons of turf toe that needed surgery, missed five games in 1999 because of back surgery and played with a bruised sternum last season.
McNair had to withdraw from the Pro Bowl in February as he went from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was wrong with his right shoulder. An MRI where dye was injected into the shoulder didn't help, and doctors wound up using 15 gallons of water in an attempt to flush out the infection.
He didn't throw a ball for nearly four months, but looked fully recovered when training camp opened. He missed three days of work with the Indianapolis Colts with soreness in the shoulder and was limited to one practice a day the remainder of camp.
"This is only the beginning of the season, and here I am. I have shoulder problems again," McNair said. "It's not explainable. I'm not only frustrated, I'm disappointed in myself. But this is something that's out of my control." |
