Broncos' Gary likely will need surgery

Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- Denver Broncos running back Olandis Gary left Thursday's game against Dallas because of a broken bone in his lower left leg.

Gary was hurt when he tackled at the end of a 9-yard gain on the opening play of the Broncos' second drive.

The injury was first reported as a twisted left ankle, but X-rays revealed the broken fibula that likely will require surgery.

That left Mike Anderson as the only of Denver's top three runners in the game. Terrell Davis was inactive because he is still recovering for arthroscopic knee surgery, but could return Dec. 2 at Miami.

After rushing for 1,159 yards a rookie in 1999, Gary was limited to one game last season because of torn ligaments in his right knee. He rushed for 90 yards against Arizona on Sept. 23, but has just 147 yards in the seven games he's played since. He had three carries for 14 yards against Dallas.
