EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Arizona Cardinals kicker Bill Gramatica hyperextended his right knee jumping in the air to celebrate a first-quarter field goal against the New York Giants on Saturday. Gramatica's knee will be re-examined Monday, and it's not known when he'll be able to kick again for the Cardinals. The injury prevented him from kicking off during the final three quarters.
Gramatica, who kicked a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter, said very little after the Giants rallied for a 17-13 victory.
"It's a hyperextension and that's all I want to say until further notice," said Gramatica, who made reporters wait almost 30 minutes for his one sentence. He then limped out of the locker room.
Arizona coach Dave McGinnis said the injury might have been the most bizarre he has seen in 27 years of coaching.
After making a 42-yard field goal into a stiff 17-mph breeze, Gramatica ran toward the Cardinals bench, jumped and pumped his fist. When the rookie landed, he started limping on his right leg, his plant leg on kicks.
"That was a freak accident," Cardinals linebacker Ronald McKinnon said. "Anything can happen but you would have thought something like that can never happen to a kicker. I hate to see a young guy like that blow a knee out."
On the ensuing kickoff, Gramatica booted a line drive that only went about 30 yards.
"He did something. He sprained his knee," McGinnis said. "I don't know the degree of it yet but he could not plant on it because it kept popping out."
After being examined on the sidelines, Gramatica went to the locker room, had his knee taped, and then he returned. However, starting safety Pat Tillman handled the rest of the kickoffs.
"It's been a while, probably high school," Tillman said of his kickoffs. "I do the onside kick and fool around with field goals. I played soccer as a kid. I'm not any good at it, but at least I can do it. That was a freak deal him getting hurt. I don't imagine we'll ever see it again."
McGinnis guaranteed that.
"To answer your question, he'll never do that again."
The injury hurt the Cardinals after they took a 13-10 lead in the final minutes on Tywan Mitchell's spectacular 24-yard, fourth-down touchdown reception.
Tillman barely got the kickoff to the 20, and the Giants started their final drive at the 30. Eleven plays later, Amani Toomer caught a winning 4-yard touchdown pass from Kerry Collins.
Gramatica has converted 16 of 20 field-goal attempts this season. He shared the NFC special teams player of the week award with his brother, Martin of Tampa Bay, two weeks ago when both kicked winning field goals in overtime.
Both players usually jump in the air to celebrate their field goals. |
