Siragusa calling it a career after 12 years

Associated Press

COCKEYSVILLE, Md. -- The Goose soon will be gone from the Baltimore Ravens.

Tony Siragusa, a veteran defensive tackle who starred on last year's Super Bowl championship team, announced his retirement Thursday night on his weekly radio show on WJFK-AM.

He said he would pursue a career in brodcasting after this season.

"I came into this league as a free agent, on my terms, and I'm gonna leave on my terms," the 34-year-old Siragusa said.

The effervescent Siragusa, known as "The Goose" during his seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and the last five with Baltimore, has played in 14 games with 12 starts this year. He has been plagued by chronic knee and lower-leg injuries as the Ravens (9-6) have struggled to reach the playoffs.

"It's been a tough year what with the expectations," Siragusa said. "We're coming back with the same defensive personnel, and when you win a Super Bowl you think the same momentum is going to carry on."

He had arthroscopic knee surgery during the preseason, and has missed just one game this year, the Ravens' 16-0 win over Cincinnati on Dec. 16.

Siragusa came to Baltimore as an unrestricted free agent in 1997 and, with 2001 Pro Bowl pick Sam Adams, formed a 700-plus-pound defensive tackle tandem that proved to be nearly impenetrable.

Siragusa proved to be an instant fan favorite in Baltimore, and has often been compared to former Baltimore Colt Art Donovan for his humor, voracious eating habits and constant radio and television appearances.

In the Ravens' 2000 championship season, the 6-foot-3, 340-pound Siragusa was sixth among Baltimore defenders with 75 tackles, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery. This season, Siragusa ranks ninth on the club with 53 tackles. He also has three passes defensed and recorded two sacks in the Ravens' win at Tennessee in November.

Siragusa has 707 career tackles and 21 sacks.
