Beathard reportedly seeks return to Washington

ESPN.com news services

Bobby Beathard, the former general manager of the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins, would accept an offer if it were made to become GM of the Redskins if coach Marty Schottenheimer were fired, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Citing anonymous NFL sources, the newspaper reported that the Redskins have discussed the GM job with Beathard but are holding off until owner Daniel Snyder determines if former Florida coach Steve Spurrier is interested in coaching the team.

The Post story said Beathard would be willing to work with Snyder and Spurrier, according to sources.

It has been reported that Schottenheimer has softened his stance on working with a GM, telling Snyder he might do so but that he doesn't want to change his offensive coaching staff.

That could be a sticking point, because some of Snyder's advisers told the Post that Schottenheimer should be fired unless he replaces offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye with a coach from outside the organization.

Redskins officials also would like to see if they have a shot of hiring San Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci, who despite being under contract to the 49ers might consider leaving because of increasing pressure from former coach Bill Walsh, now a team consultant, and GM Terry Donahue, the Post reported.
