ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Jerry Rice sounds like he's ready to get
back to work.
After completing his first season with the Oakland Raiders, Rice made it clear Sunday that he wants to return for another season.
"I still have a lot of football in me," the 39-year-old receiver said. "I don't want to end like this. That was a tough defeat to swallow."
Rice spoke with reporters just before the Raiders held their final team meeting following Saturday's 16-13 overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the second round of the playoffs.
Rice caught four passes for 48 yards, though he failed to grab a touchdown pass that would have tied him with Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas -- each with 21 -- for most career playoff touchdowns. He caught a pass in his record 25th straight playoff game.
He had a sensational game in the first round against the New York Jets, catching nine passes for 183 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass from Rich Gannon.
Rice, the NFL's career leader in most receiving categories, spent the first 16 years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, who released him in June because of salary cap problems.
"One thing is I had fun," Rice said. "That's something that was lacking the last couple of years. Coming here revitalized my career."
With his performance against the Patriots, Rice became the first player in playoff history to gain more than 2,000 yards receiving. He has 136 catches for 2,042 yards.
Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin is next with 87 receptions and 1,315 yards.
"I'm going to sit back and look at both the positives and negatives from what I did this season," Rice said. "Overall, I thought I was very productive."
All Rice did was grab 83 passes for 1,139 yards, his 15th year with at least 50 catches and his 13th 1,000-yard receiving season. In the process, he became the first receiver with more than 20,000 career yards.
"There's always room for improvement," he said. "I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to come here. We made a great run, we just came up a little short. Now I'm going to think about everything during my time off and not rush into anything." |
