It looks like the Houston Texans will grab offensive tackle Tony Boselli with the first pick in the Feb. 18 expansion draft.
Boselli, a three-time All Pro tackle with the Jacksonville Jaguars, flew to Houston on Thursday to take a physical for the Texans. KTRH Radio in Houston reported that if Boselli passes the exam, it's expected Houston will draft him first. The seven-year veteran has been one of the league's best offensive linemen, but he missed most of last season following operations on both shoulders. Each club had to leave five players unprotected for the draft, and Boselli was one that the Jaguars left unprotected. Boselli, the first-ever draft pick of the Jaguars seven years ago, was likely left unprotected because Jacksonville is $23 million over the salary cap. "It's one thing to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars and being the first (draft) pick (in franchise history) and being there for so many years, but I really have laid some roots in that city with my family and my foundation," Boselli told the Houston Chronicle on Thursday. "That's where our church is. We love it there. It would be hard for us to leave the city. "But if Houston were to take me, it's a great opportunity, and I'd play hard and give it all I can. It would be a hard adjustment for the family, but I know we would be all right. We'd do our best for the city and the team." Even if the Texans don't take the highly-regarded tackle in the draft, they could still land him if the Jaguars wind up releasing him in a cap-related move. Baltimore Ravens return specialist Jermaine Lewis also arrived in Houston on Thursday, the Chronicle reported. Lewis also has close ties to his team and city, having grown up in Maryland and attended the University of Maryland before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. A valuable special teams performer, Lewis provided a spark with a punt return for a touchdown in the Ravens' playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC divisional round. Lewis has six career punt returns for scores. "This is a very unusual situation because I really have no control over it," Lewis told the Chronicle. "They put my name on the list, and I sit and wait. "I was really kind of expecting something like this. And kind of hoping. I'm from Maryland, and I love Baltimore, but sometimes you have to move on, and it may be time to move on." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. |
