Hampton faces drunken-driving charges

Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK -- An arraignment for former Chicago Bears football star Dan Hampton has been set for Feb. 20 in Cabot District Court on a drunken-driving charge.

Hampton, 44, was arrested Monday night by state police on U.S. 67 just outside the Cabot city limits. The arrest was his second for DWI in five years.

Hampton lives at Cabot.

He was selected Saturday for entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The organization voted Saturday in New Orleans on who would be inducted this year, and Hampton told the arresting officer he was afraid news of the arrest would ruin his chances.

Hampton was a defensive lineman on Chicago's 1986 championship team. He was drafted by the Bears No. 4 overall in 1979 and was named All-Pro in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1986. Hampton retired from football in 1990.

Hampton was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to a breath test, careless and prohibitive driving and failing to register his sport-utility vehicle.
