WASHINGTON -- Much-traveled quarterback Trent Dilfer could land in the nation's capital next season.
The Redskins are going to make a strong effort to sign Dilfer, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The Redskins are also targeting wide receiver Willie Jackson, according to the published report. Jackson had 81 receptions for 1,046 yards for the New Orleans Saints last season. Unlike most teams in the NFL, the Redskins have some salary cap room. They are $4 million under the league's salary cap. Dilfer, who played for the Seattle Seahawks last season after helping the Baltimore Ravens win Super Bowl XXXV the year before, will reportedly be courted by five teams -- the Redskins, Seahawks, the expansion Houston Texans, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills. Dilfer hopes to have a home within 10 days, the Post reported. Club officials told the Post they likely would drop out of the running for Dilfer -- and perhaps go after Chris Chandler, who was released by Atlanta -- if Dilfer's price reaches $3 million per season or more. "The Redskins will always remain fairly aggressive," Redskins owner Daniel Snyder told the Post. "But we'll hold to our disciplines." Dilfer, who will turn 30 on March 13, spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after an oustanding college career at Fresno State. He has 89 career touchdown passes and 95 interceptions.
