Martz: Cris Carter not coming to Rams

Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Although the St. Louis Rams are short on wide receivers, they won't reopen discussions with Cris Carter.

Coach Mike Martz, who prefers a deep collection of wideouts for his potent offense, said Wednesday the NFC champions will meet with Johnnie Morton, who was released by Detroit. They also have spoken with free agents Joe Jurevicius and Terrence Wilkins.

But Carter no longer is a candidate to replace Az-zahir Hakim, who signed with the Lions, or Ricky Proehl, an unrestricted free agent Martz hopes will return to St. Louis.

"We're ready to move on," Martz said of Carter, who stood up the Rams on a planned visit earlier this month, annoying the coach. "It didn't look like it would work out, so why bring him in?"

Almost by default, it now appears the Miami Dolphins are the frontrunners to land the future Hall of Fame receiver, the Miami Herald reported on Thursday.

Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt, senior vice president Rick Spielman and chief operating officer Bryan Wiedmeier all told the Herald on Wednesday that they have not offered a contract to Carter. Spielman told the newspaper he will talk to Carter's new agent, Fletcher Smith, next week.
