The Detroit Lions completed the revamping of their interior secondary on Tuesday night, as ESPN.com learned that the team has reached an agreement with unrestricted strong safety Corey Harris, a 10-year veteran coming off his finest statistical season. Following a 2001 campaign in which the Lions lost three veteran safeties to serious injuries, club officials made the position a priority. Earlier in the free agent period, Detroit added Brian Walker, who'll pair with Harris in the starting lineup. Harris, 32, will sign a three-year contract worth $3.1 million. The deal includes a signing bonus of $650,000. The veteran safety has been sought for weeks by the Washington Redskins, but they never presented a contract proposal that met his demands. In addition to Harris, who played the last four seasons in Baltimore, the Lions also re-signed a pair of their own unrestricted free agents, guard Kerlin Blaise and defensive tackle Travis Kirschke. Details of those two veteran contracts were not yet available. In replacing the departed Kim Herring for 2001, Harris started all 16 games for the Ravens, more starts than he had in the previous four seasons combined. He tied his career best for tackles (84) and also had two interceptions. Not since 1996, when he was playing in Seattle, had Harris started more than seven games. Used primarly as a kickoff return specialist and "nickel" defender early in his career, Harris has developed only in the last few seasons as a solid defender of starting caliber. His play surprised many observers in 2001, but runningmate Rod Woodson contended Harris was always an unsung safety, and Ravens coaches demonstrated great confidence in him. The Lions will become the sixth different team for Harris, who began his career with the Houston Oilers as a third-round choice in the 1992 draft. He was claimed that year on waivers by Green Bay and played three seasons with the Packers. His other stops have included Seattle (1995-96), Miami (1997) and Baltimore (1998-2001). Harris has played in 154 games and started 63 of them, and has 456 tackles, nine interceptions, 42 passes defensed and three sacks. Kirschke and Blaise both signed with the Lions as undrafted free agents, the former in 1997 and the latter in '98. Blaise has played in 34 games and started four of them. Kirschke counts nine starts among his 48 appearances. Len Pasquarelli and John Clayton are senior writers for ESPN.com. |
