Rhodes injures right knee in practice

Associated Press

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes injured his right knee in the final 30 minutes of practice Thursday.

Rhodes was hurt while running a sideline pass route, coach Tony Dungy said. Dungy said Rhodes was expected to have an MRI by Friday morning.

"We don't know the extent yet,'' Dungy said.

Team doctors tested Rhodes' knee for several minutes as he lay on the sideline with a handful of teammates huddled around him. He then limped down the sideline, without assistance, and went straight to the locker room. He did not return.

Rhodes was expected to team with two-time NFL rushing champ Edgerrin James to give the Colts a strong 1-2 punch at running back. Last season, Rhodes set an NFL rushing record for undrafted free agents when he ran for 1,104 yards after replacing James. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the team's sixth game.

Rhodes dislocated his left shoulder in practice last week while diving for a pass. He returned to practice in the afternoon but was held out of the Colts' preseason opener last Saturday at Seattle.

Earlier Thursday, Dungy said it was unlikely Rhodes would play Saturday when the Colts play host to Cincinnati.
