Bowens breaks hand in practice

Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins defensive end David Bowens broke his hand in practice and underwent surgery Tuesday that will sideline him for up to a month.

Bowens injured the top of his left hand when he hit it against a teammate's helmet Monday night.

The Dolphins hope Bowens can return for the season opener Sept. 8 against Detroit. If not, they expect he will play the following week against Indianapolis.

"It's not like it's a knee or an ankle or anything that's going to need a lot of rehab,'' Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said.

Also Tuesday, the Dolphins traded offensive tackle Cornell Green to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a seventh-round draft pick next year.

Green, who played at the University of Central Florida, signed with the Dolphins in January as a free agent. He spent part of last season on Miami's practice squad.
